Day 1
After leaving Whitehorse we fly north
through the Big Salmon Range to the small community
of Ross River. From there, we’ll begin to follow
the historic CANOL Pipeline. An engineering marvel of
the Second World War, the pipeline was built by the
US Army to keep oil flowing south. Our route then takes
us through the Mackenzie Mountains before we reach the
flatlands and the small community of Norman Wells, where
we’ll spend the night. Flying time: 3 hours
Day 2
Today we will tour Norman Wells and visit
the town museum. Norman Wells, situated on the north
bank of the Mackenzie River, has a colourful history
and prehistory. The area is a rich source of fossils.
Explorer Alexander Mackenzie first noticed oil seepages
near here in the late 18th century. The first claims
were staked in the early 20th century, with the first
refinery being built in the1920s. After lunch we will
fly southeast to the North Nahanni Naturalist Lodge
located on scenic Cli Lake. At this cozy wilderness
retreat you can spend your evening either fishing or
just relaxing. Flying Time: 2 hours
Day 3
From Cli Lake we depart southwest and up
the Nahanni range to Nahanni National Park Reserve.
In 1978 this exotic wilderness location became the world’s
first World Heritage Site, an honour conferred by UNESCO.
Here we will land above spectacular Virginia Falls,
where the friendly park staff will meet us and take
us on a short walk to the falls, which are twice the
height of Niagara Falls. Afterwards we will reboard
our plane for the return flight to Whitehorse. Flying
